Comparing the amount a star was paid with the eventual box-office revenue for that film would be a good way to begin working out who’s the most overpaid. But as some actresses did not release a film in the last year we can’t simply correlate the amount someone was paid over the last year with revenue. Ultimately, directors only want to make great films and audiences only want to pay to watch great films. An actress therefore has been overpaid if the amount she has earned in a year doesn’t correlate well with their own overall critical success.

So who’s the most overpaid?

Number ten on the Forbes list is Kristen Stewart, the real star of Twilight. In the period that Forbes use, June 2009 – June 2010, she earned $12 million. Having starred in 19 films over her career, she has an average career rating of 49 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, the premier box office web site. Considering how fickle some movie industry critics are, 5/10 for a lifetime of films isn’t half bad (or half good!). And $12 million a year is nothing in Hollywood these days. Stewart is certainly not going to be the most overpaid actress in Hollywood, even with such a meager average. She’s got her whole career to fix that.

Drew Barrymore is one of a few of Hollywood’s biggest female stars to make their directorial debuts this year. That, along with producer credits on the film He’s Just Not That Into You, helped her earn $15 million in the 2010 period we’re looking at. It’s a long way to come since starring in her breakout movie: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. She creeps in between Stewart and Maryl Streep with a slightly above average 55 per cent average from 43 films.

Also making her directorial debut this year is Angelina Jolie who earned $20 million in 2010. By commanding such a high fee you would assume that this will be reflected in the critical success’s of her films, if not we can certainly consider her overpaid. She slumps in with a 44 per cent career rating. Considering that she’s the highest earner so far, she’s by far the most overrated. Julia Roberts, meanwhile earned a similar amount to Jolie, and she was once the world’s highest paid actress. This year she did Eat, Pray, Love, and not too much more. Her 37 career films rated on Rotten Tomatoes put her well above Jolie at 52 per cent average rating.

Now we’re really getting somewhere: Sarah Jessica Parker has been too busy with TV in recent years so hasn’t made so many films, and much of her huge $25 million earnings come from other deals. In her 28 movies she commanded an average of only 43 per cent rating, making her our most overpaid star so far.

With $27 million in the bank from 2010, Jennifer Aniston should be smiling since she just edged out Sarah Jessica Parker with 45 per cent rating across of her films, so she can’t be considered as overpaid. Cameron Diaz starts to really step up the game by earning $32 million in 2010, and she justifies it though with an average rating of 53 per cent over her whole career, making the extra few millions worth it for the critical approval her films have earned.

Tying with Diaz on $37 million for the year is Reese Witherspoon. Unlike Jolie, who hasn’t done a film very recently, it feels like Witherspoon has been away for many years. Most of the millions come not from Hollywood, but from her role as the face of the Avon brand. But her career average ratings exceeds the half-way mark, coming in at 52 per cent, so you can’t knock her for being overpaid. At least not the most overpaid.

Sandra Bullock blows the field away according to Forbes by earning an incredible $56 million in 2010. The high and low ends of her career according to the critics are Speed and Speed 2. With a miserable average score of only 41 per cent over the course of her whole career, thanks to a few abysmal performances, we can now categorically say that Sandra Bullock, no matter how many Oscars she wins, is most the highest paid and most overpaid actress in Hollywood. Who would’ve thought.
